“Somehow I can’t believe there are any heights that can’t be scaled by a man who knows the secret of making dreams come true. This special secret, it seems to me, can be summarized in four C’s. They are Curiosity, Confidence, Courage, and Constancy and the greatest of these is Confidence. When you believe a thing, believe it all the way, implicitly and unquestionably.” Walt Disney
When I first came across this quote, it was in the middle of my certification as a Confidence Coach. The program was particularly brutal, because it made me focus on my own situation first, so that I could better serve others. I did not realize until that point how much my level of confidence affected all areas of my life – career, relationships, important decisions and even my everyday actions. This quote highlighted a lot of the major areas that were keeping me from achieving what I wanted to achieve ….
CURIOSITY – Interest and excitement always make anything you want to achieve easier. But this also works when you are faced with a challenge you don’t really want but nevertheless need to face head on. For example, if you are a student struggling in a class due to lack of interest, you will find it much easier to succeed if you can find some way to “connect” to the subject matter. Many of your goals will require elements that are not always fun. Find a way to build curiosity and connect anyway.
CONFIDENCE – “Believe a thing… implicitly and unquestioningly.” Most people, even highly successful people, have at least one or more areas that they are holding back in due to a lack of confidence. You simply do not have enough faith in yourself. It’s one thing to be knowledgeable of your strengths and weaknesses; it’s another to make decisions based on inaccurate or biased information – including about yourself.
COURAGE – Courage is not the absence of fear, but taking action despite fear. Be brave. Try new things. If you wait until you have all the answers, if you think you must remove all uncertainty first, you will never take action.
CONSTANCY – Have an extreme level of loyalty to your dream. Be unwavering in your purpose. In order to do this, you have to know clearly what your purpose is.
Even as wonderful and amazing as this quote was when I first read it, I felt it was missing an element…
CONSISTENCY – “Inches make Champions” – Vince Lombardi. Striving bit by bit, every day, taking action and not just thinking about it, is required. Today’s habits determine your tomorrow. The greater the dream, the more important being consistent in making progress toward that dream becomes. It has to be conscious; it has to be measureable. And a key to making this happen is – making it accountable as well.
